One of the best and most explosive ways for new marketers to get started with making money online is through the Amazon Associates Program.
Here are some of the reasons why it is a great way for new people to get started as an Amazon Associate:
- it's free to join
- simple rules to follow
- no money down
- mistake free environment
It is completely free for you to be an associate of Amazon. You do need to have a website and then apply to the program. If you don't have a website you can start one here for FREE. You can get started for a very cheap price. If you don't have a domain name yet a company like Namecheap can provide that for you for under $20 for the whole year.
The other thing your going to need is a hosting company. For my Personal Finance niche website I use Siteground. It's cheap and the level of support when I need it is outstanding. It costs me less than $10 a month to have them host my site.
You can virtually start your own business online for less than $20 per month. That is a mind blowing deal. If you try and compare that to starting an offline business in a great location, you're going to end up paying $1000-$1500 a month in lease payments. Probably have to take out a second mortgage on your house if you own one.
Here you can get started online for a year at around $250. Just for a laugh go in and tell the bank that's all you need for a small business loan.
The other amazing thing about starting an affiliate marketing business is you don't have to stock any inventory. You simply promote products and services that are relevant to what your blog/website is all about. Amazon takes care of shipping, processing and any customer complaints. You never have to deal with any of that.
This takes the downside away from going out and stocking up on a whole bunch of inventory that doesn't sell.
How do I get started with this business model and what do I need to do to get going? Let's look at some simple steps to follow.
Your Affiliate Business Model
Step #1: Choose a Subject - this should be something that excites you. A subject that you can't wait to jump out of bed in the morning and tell the world about. You have a really strong interest in it and are very passionate about. You might like Cross Fit, eating healthy, flying drones, you embrace the paleo lifestyle, you like to do woodworking in your spare time, you love to make home made wine, you like to do your own investing.
Out of all those, I started my own niche website on Personal Finance and how I like to invest my own money and where I invest it. I also like to research and talk about retirement as that is something whether we like it or not we are all headed. These are the things that interest me, of course our list will be different.
Yes, this is a screenshot of my niche website on Personal Finance.
The main takeaway here is to choose something that you are going to be able to talk about for a long time. You don't want to get bored and abandon ship after a couple weeks.
You have competition, so what? When someone googles that subject eventually they are taken to your website. With enough work and time, you will have built authority and they will end up on your site and ask for advice. This doesn't happen overnight but it will happen if you stick with it.
Step #2: You Need A Website - anyone in business today needs a website. There is no debate, you have to make one and get busy doing it right away. This is probably the most intimidating and excruciating process for newbies to go through. It was for me as your mind constantly fills with doubt. With the technology available today you can build a website in mere minutes. No special geeky skills are needed.
Of course it will take some time for you to feel comfortable building out your website but this is essentially your online store where you will meet your customers. The better shape your store is in, the more it will attract customers.
Step #3: Research and Keywords -
To attract customers to your website you have to put something there. That something is information. Info that they are searching answers for. Think of the times you use Google. As soon as you want to know something you type it into Google. All kinds of results come up. You then choose one and click on it to find out if that's the answer to your query.
You can try Jaaxy one of the most powerful keyword research tools out there. A free trial is available for you to take advantage of.
You have to know what people are searching for and the best way to do that is with a tool that helps with the process. Let's start with a mundane word like wine. It's very broad subject just typing in wine. You want to narrow it down and help people solve a problem they might be having making their own wine. Start your queries with common phrases like these ones:
- best red wines to make
- how to brew the best wine
- why does my wine cellar smell
- who builds the best wine making equipment
- where can I find great tasting red wines
- when is the best time to make wine
- what is a good wine recipe to follow
Other helpful websites you may want to visit are:
A you can see you can write articles on any of these subjects using the words, how to, who, what, where, when and why. Helping people solve a problem is the best way to get them into your store.
Step #4: Writing Content -
Try and keep your writing down to conversational style. Write like you are talking to someone you know sitting beside you. Do you want to read something written by a science professor on wine making? or would you prefer easy to understand speak from some 50-60 year old actually doing it as a hobby in his basement because he loves it. Write like that guy and you'll never go wrong.
Remember, your just helping people to find products related to winemaking. The more simply you put that information out there the easier it is for them to relate to you. You're not writing a school essay. This is another reason why it's really important for you to choose a subject that you're excited about and love talking about. I haven't made my own wine in awhile but I still love talking about it.
Step #5: Inserting Product Links -
Amazon makes this process so easy for you. Just select a product, they provide you with the text link and a picture of the product. Once inside your text editor of your website you just copy the code, insert and save.
It does take a bit of practice to master the skill and get quicker at it but repetition is the mother of all skills. Don't dwell on this step too much at first. Writing quality content is a lot more important in the beginning of your online amazon journey.
How Do I Make Money?
It is possible to make a good living just promoting Amazon products on your website. It takes time before you really get good at it but there are tons of people doing just that.
When someone visits your site and likes a product that you've recommended and then clicks on the link, you will be paid a commission when they buy it. How much? (see table below) If they just click on that product and don't buy it, they generate a cookie on Amazon with your link that lasts for 24 hours. If they don't buy something within that time period you don't get credit.
If however, they choose 'add to cart' then you have 90 days for them to purchase the item and make that commission. The money will be added to your account and paid out to your paypal account once you hit the monthly threshold payout limit of $100.
How Do I Start?
I hope you now have a better understanding of how the amazon associates program works and how easy it is to get started working it. You need a subject to talk about and then let the magic happen for you.
I really like the affiliate marketing business model. There is no need to re-invent the wheel and come up with your own line of products to sell. It's more about doing some research on what products are trending hot by punching in keywords and then writing some content promoting that product. This is what makes it so simple a business to start. As long as you don't mind sitting at the computer and writing out reviews and have shared interests and hobbies, then you can find success very easily combined with hard work.
All that you really lack is a starting point and training. I would add good training. The place I recommend you go for that training is an online learning school called Wealthy Affiliate. It will teach you all you need to know about affiliate marketing and how to start an amazon associates website. It is where I got started two years ago and where I'm still active today.
